Library Opening Hours

Closed 3 Apr 2019

Opened 6 Mar 2019

In August 2017 the Hounslow Library Service came back to the Council after being run by an external body. The Library Service consists of 11 libraries, an archives and local studies collection, specialist services serving schools and discrete users e.g. those who are housebound and isolated.

The Library Strategy 2018 to 2022 has these key aims:

  • Brighter futures: supporting confidence in reading and readiness for school
  • Supporting health and wellbeing particularly for older people
  • Giving communities access to free information and signposting
  • Delivering a viable, sustainable and quality service which is value for money

We are reviewing everything we do, and opening hours have not been looked for several years. In that time, the way people choose to use libraries has changed. Under the proposal the total staffed opening hours across all sites will remain unchanged. Additional self-service opening hours will be available at the two libraries based in leisure centres, Hanworth and Isleworth. No libraries will be closed, and all will run with paid staff, not volunteers.

This proposal details a review of the Library opening hours to ensure services are delivered in the most efficient manner to meet our customers' needs. Statistical information has been collected detailing the usage of each Library in terms of books/media borrowed, computer usage and income generated.

Why We Are Consulting

We're carrying out this consultation in order to hear your views on the proposals, and we welcome feedback and comments to help inform our plans.

What Happens Next

Once the consultation has closed, the feedback will be reviewed by the library team and presented to the Director of Customer Relations, Environment and Culture, for implementation by summer 2019.
