Hanworth Park Community Woodland Proposal 2023

Closed 19 Mar 2023

Opened 20 Feb 2023

Overview

The London Borough of Hounslow has some superb green spaces that everyone can be proud of. They are places where people can relax, enjoy nature, play, or take part in cultural and historic activities and recreation. They are essential for the health and well-being of our residents, and they are vibrant spaces for our communities.

In Hounslow, we are committed to stimulating a strong and robust green recovery related to our Greener Borough Framework and Climate Emergency. The Council’s Green and Blue Infrastructure Strategy will play a major role in delivering the Greener Borough Framework and sets out key priorities for our green spaces in areas such as health and wellbeing, regeneration, climate change and nature recovery.

Hanworth Park is an important asset for residents who use the park for lots of different recreational activities. It is also a valuable green space to help tackle the current nature and climate change emergency. The Hanworth Park Community Woodland project aims to transform an area of land to the southeast of the wider Hanworth Park from a poor condition, inaccessible brownfield site into a valued public resource and greenspace.

We are currently at the development stage of the project and are undertaking several surveys to help us develop concept design plans for the site. We are therefore keen to get your views on the proposal, which will be considered during the design process.

What are we proposing?

The council is focussing on innovative enhancements to green and blue spaces in the borough and the wider public realm to strengthen climate resilience, increase biodiversity, improve accessibility, build green skills and help reduce health inequalities.

The project aims to open up and capture the potential of a currently inaccessible area of woodland, scrub and brownfield land next to Hanworth Park.

The project will see the creation of a new community cycle hub, the restoration of a large traditional orchard, creation of new entrances and pathways, and a mosaic of ecologically rich wildlife habitats, including wetland areas.

We welcome your feedback and would ask that you provide your feedback on the scheme by 20 March 2023.

Why your views matter

The council is focussing on innovative enhancements to green and blue spaces in the borough and the wider public realm to strengthen climate resilience, increase biodiversity, improve accessibility, build green skills and help reduce health inequalities.

Hanworth is in the top 20% of most deprived areas in the UK with a low uptake of exercise by children and adults. Access to a high quality green space with an improved offer for physical activity and recreation will support the ambition for a healthier, thriving and liveable area to live in.

What happens next

We’re unable to respond to every respondent, however all feedback will be summarised and used to inform the concept design plans and to help secure future funding for the project.

Once complete, the concept design plans will be available to view on the council’s website, which is likely to be in Spring/Summer 2023.
