Cycle Parking Bikehangar - Proposed New Sites

Closes 17 Dec 2020

Opened 20 Nov 2020

Overview

As part of the council’s commitment to increase levels of cycling in the borough, we provide residents with the opportunity to apply for cycle parking in the form of a bikehangar. Bikehangars offer secure cycle parking for residents in areas where the ability to safely store bikes within a property, or the front/rear garden is limited.

The council covers the installation cost of new bikehangar and also provides a 50% subsidy on the cost of renting spaces. Therefore, the annual rental fee per year is £36 per space, with each hangar providing space for six bikes. A bikehangar’s dimensions are as follows: 2.5m (length) x 2m (width/depth) x 1.4m (height), approximately the size of half a car parking space.

Due to the crisis this year, we have seen an influx of demand for bikehangars, as more residents look to cycle in order to maintain social distancing and help contribute to reducing the spread of the virus. To fulfil this demand, the council is subsequently proposing bikehangars at multiple sites across the borough.

Bikehangar Sites

Ashbourne Grove, Chiswick: A second bikehangar is being proposed on this road, adjacent to the currently existing hangar, as the current hangar is full and has a substantial waiting list.

Balfern Grove, ChiswickA section of single yellow line has been selected in order to reduce impact on parking.

Braemar Road, Brentford: Due to narrow footways throughout the street, a local entrance to the old football stadium Griffin Park, adjacent to number 46 has been selected. This will allow enough footway space for the hangar to open fully and for the cycle storage to be accessed.

Dartmouth Place, Chiswick: The location chosen is to support where demand and the requests originally came from.

Duke Road, Chiswick: The location chosen is to support where demand and the requests originally came from.

Hamilton Road, BrentfordThe location chosen is to support where demand and the requests originally came from.

Orchard Road, Brentford: Along the road the footway is too narrow for a hangar to be installed adjacent to a property/within a parking bay, as the footway lacks the required width. This would cause an obstruction to pedestrians, creating access problems to resident’s who try to store/remove their bike from the hangar. The proposed location therefore provides the required footway width and does not cause the problems mentioned.

Oxford Road North, Chiswick: The proposed location is situated in a parking bay local to Tomlison Close, where the original resident requested was received. This parking bay is chosen, as it will still allow at least two cars to be able to park in that designated bay once the bikehangar is installed, thus minimising the impact of parking on the road.

Riverview Road, Chiswick:The location chosen is to support where demand and the requests originally came from, and off the public highway, to avoid removing car parking spaces. Additional dropped kerbs are proposed to aid pedestrians crossing the existing cycle track.

Stamford Brook Avenue, ChiswickThe location chosen is to support where demand and the requests originally came from.

Thorney Hedge Road, Chiswick: An existing bikehangar on the adjoining road, Silver Crescent is full and has generated a waiting list.

Waldeck Road, Chiswick: This will be a re-consultation, as there is still demand for a hangar on the road. Previous objections to the hangar near to the junction with Hearne Road are noted, and the new hangar location is proposed to be situated closer to the properties where the original demand and request derived from.

Whitehall Park Road, Chiswick: The location chosen is to support where demand and the requests originally came from, whereby the initial request was made through the South Chiswick Liveable Neighbourhood project.
