Colonial Road – Traffic Management Proposals

Closed 24 Feb 2020

Opened 13 Jan 2020

Results Updated 2 Apr 2020

Following this consultation, the officers' recommendation to ward councillors was to not proceed with traffic management interventions on Colonial Road.

Full details of this decision can be accessed on the council webpage here (see Item 1).

Thank you again to all those who took the time to participate in this consultation.

We would like your views on possible changes to the way traffic can use Colonial Road as a way of reducing the impact of through traffic.

The council is inviting you to provide your views on three options:

Option 1: No entry into Colonial Road at Bedfont Lane
Option 2: Alternative intervention
Option 3: No change

Your comments on the proposals are welcomed using the survey at the bottom of this page. If you need this information in an alternative format please contact us, and if you would like to view the proposals in more detail with council staff present, please come along to the drop in session on Tuesday, 21 January as detailed below at the bottom of this page.

Consultation feedback will be summarised and presented to Ward Councillors for consideration later in 2020. It is proposed that should the consultation show support for intervention, that a trial of up to 18 months be undertaken to monitor the impact of traffic in Colonial Road and the surrounding area, and gather further information and feedback.

Background information

The proposal for a no entry into Colonial Road at Bedfont Lane has been put forward in order to reduce the volume of traffic on Colonial Road in particular reduce the amount of journeys that use Colonial Road and surrounding roads as a through route - "rat-running". This proposal supports the council’s Local Implementation Plan for transport 2019-2041, in which the council stated that support will be given to residents who want to reduce through traffic in their street. The proposals are likely to improve the environment for pedestrians and cyclists, encouraging growth in sustainable travel and further improving road safety.

In September 2019 we collected traffic data to understand driver’s origins and destinations, as well as volumes and speeds. Surveys confirmed that there is a high amount of through traffic on Colonial Road.

Further details of the traffic survey data can be found here.

Why We Are Consulting

We’re carrying out this consultation in order to hear your views on the proposals. We welcome feedback and comments that can help inform our plans.
