London Borough of Hounslow is consulting on its draft Electric Vehicle Charging Strategy (EV Charging Strategy). The UK government have announced that the sale of cars/vans powered by petrol and diesel will be banned by 2030. The strategy sets out a plan for delivering the 2000 chargepoints we consider will be needed by 2026, to enable more people to switch to electric vehicles.
Recharging an Electric Vehicle (EV) takes longer than refuelling a petrol or diesel vehicle, with recharging times varying depending on the type of car and the type of chargepoint. There are three main types of charger: rapid chargers, fast destination chargers or slower chargers. We recognise that different users will have varying needs, although there is still uncertainty over what types of chargepoints people will prefer to use. Households without off-street parking will rely more heavily on public charging facilities.
Hounslow Council, as the body responsible for managing the highway, is the only organisation which can facilitate the installation of kerbside chargepoints on our streets. Our EV Charging Strategy aims to deliver an improved distribution of all three types of chargers boroughwide, and then carefully monitor usage, before reviewing the strategy again.
