Heath Road Zebra Crossing and School Street Consultation

Closes 19 Dec 2022

Opened 21 Nov 2022

We would like your views on proposals to create a zebra crossing and school street on Heath Road.

The proposal is to construct a new zebra crossing on Heath Road, west of Atcham Road, and to implement a school street on Heath Road, between no. 65 Heath Road and Atcham Road. The scheme aims to improve pedestrian safety, particularly at school drop of and pick up times when pedestrian movement is at its highest, and to encourage more local trips to be made on foot.

Zebra crossing

To improve pedestrian safety and make it easier to cross Heath Road at the eastern end of Chatsworth School, particularly for school children and carers at the start and end of the school day, we are proposing to construct a new zebra crossing outside 105-107 Heath Road.

As a result, parking availability would be slightly amended. The two existing bays outside nos. 105-107 Heath Road will replace the waiting restriction (single yellow line) outside nos. 101-103 Heath Road. The single parking bay outside no. 109 Heath Road would be removed to accommodate the new footway buildout and zebra crossing. Loading will also be slightly restricted as no loading would be permitted at any time on the white zig-zag road markings for the zebra crossing.

The proposed location of the new zebra crossing is shown below:

Chatsworth Primary School school street

Following the successful implementation of school street schemes in other parts of the borough and discussions with Chatsworth Primary School and local councillors, we are now consulting on a proposal to implement a school street scheme on Heath Road.

The aim of the proposal is to restrict motor traffic in the immediate vicinity of Chatsworth Primary School during the school drop off and pick up times to improve road safety and local air quality. It also aims to reduce the use of private vehicles on the journey to and from school to encourage walking, cycling and active lifestyles for pupils and their parents and guardians.

The school street access restriction will cover the section of Heath Road between no. 65 Heath Road and Atcham Road, and would operate Monday – Friday, 8.15 – 9.15am and 2.45 – 3.45pm, during school term time. This means motor vehicles would not be able to travel into this section of Heath Road during these times, except for those who live within the zone and their visitors, blue badge holders, easily recognisable delivery vehicles (e.g. supermarket lorries) and school staff. The restriction will be enforced by the Council using CCTV, which could be either mobile or fixed cameras.

A plan showing these proposals, along with a copy of the consultation letter, can be viewed and downloaded from the “related” section at the bottom of the page.
