Hounslow Council launched its Liveable Neighbourhoods project across south Chiswick in late 2019. This project focuses on unlocking potential for more trips to be made by foot, bike and public transport, while improving public space. It will be delivered in partnership with the community, and we have been collecting feedback on the issues that impact your transport choices. This first phase of our consultation, to capture local views, closed in November 2019.

The council has analysed all the responses and suggestions received and has now published a report detailing the findings. This includes an analysis of the traffic data also collected in late 2019.

In May this year, the council announced a range of new traffic measures it was implementing to improve road safety and help social distancing in response to COVID-19. These Streetspace projects are being introduced to create more space for people in our town centres, and to get around the borough safely on foot and by bike. Since then, the Government has released statutory guidance strengthening their requirements on councils to undertake these works and for them to be done as ‘swiftly as possible’.

The council is therefore bringing forward a number of trial proposals that aim to transform the Liveable Neighbourhoods area into a ‘low traffic neighbourhood’, preventing motorists from using residential streets as a cut through between major roads. This was one of the initial aims of the project. This will be achieved by introducing a range of closures and access restrictions, significantly reducing traffic speeds and volumes in the area.  In addition, three ‘School Streets’ are proposed to remove traffic from outside school gates at collection and drop off time. All measures would be trialled for a minimum of 6 months and are reliant on securing funding from Transport for London.

We’ll be providing more updates as the project develops and continuing to work in partnership with the local community. You can use the South Chiswick Liveable Neighbourhood link below to find out more about the project, and access a copy of the report, the recommendations and trail measures proposed. Feedback from residents during the trial period is welcomed, and will help to shape the proposals in the longer term.

The Grove Park Piazza is another key part of the Liveable Neighbourhoods project. This scheme was consulted on separately in March this year. Results of that consultation will be published on the project website in due course, alongside a copy of the updated design.
