Sparrow Farm Infant School - School Streets

Closed 2 Feb 2020

Opened 21 Dec 2019

In recent years, the council has stepped up its efforts to tackle problems associated with traffic around schools at drop-off and pick-up times, notably road safety concerns, poor air quality, and inconvenience to residents.

Following successful trials in other parts of the borough, we identified Sparrow Farm Infant and Nursery School as a potential site for a "School Streets" scheme that would prevent parents and guardians from dropping their children off on the stretch of Denham Road closest to the school.

Following an informal meeting with residents and the school to discuss the idea, we are now proposing that we move forwards with implementing this scheme. The hours of operation would be 8:15 – 9:30am and 3:00 – 3:45pm, so during these times, only those accessing off-street premises (i.e. driveways or the school car-park) would be allowed to enter the road past the point of restriction shown on the plans in the "Related" section below. A Penalty Charge Notice would be issued to all other vehicles, and this would be enforced by an Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) camera.

While there may be a slight inconvenience to residents, such as visitors needing to plan visits around these times, feedback from other School Streets schemes suggests the benefits will greatly outweigh this. It should be noted that the restriction would only apply to vehicles entering the road. If a resident or visitor were to park on the street overnight and leave in the morning, that would not fall foul of the proposed new restrictions.

Why We Are Consulting

We would like as much feedback as possible from residents, parents and guardians of pupils attending the school, and all other interested stakeholders. We will summarise all consultation feedback for your local councillors, and If there is support for the scheme, we will aim to implement it by summer 2020.
