Staveley Road and Burlington Lane - trial access restrictions

Closed 7 Sep 2022

Opened 6 May 2022

We are seeking views on two new trial measures that have been implemented to reduce traffic within the South Chiswick area:

  • Staveley Road - new access restriction to general traffic operating 8am - 7pm, Monday - Saturday, except buses and permit holders.
  • Burlington Lane - 'no entry' restriction, except cycles, from the A316 into Burlington Lane.

In August 2021, the council published its decision on the trial measures that were introduced during 2020 as part of its Streetspace programme. Consultation ran alongside the trial measures and following independent reviews of the feedback received and data obtained, the decision was made to make most of the trial measures permanent.

The decision also approved the introduction of a new motor vehicle restriction on Staveley Road and a new no-entry restriction into Burlington Lane from the A316, as detailed below.

Staveley Road Chiswick School 'school street'

The Chiswick School “school street” restriction has been replaced by a new access restriction on motor vehicles operating from 8am to 7pm, Monday to Saturday, except for buses and permit holders.

It has been agreed that the exemptions list for the new restriction on Staveley Road will be extended to include residents within the Grove Park CPZ and Fauconberg Road CPZ, along with those living to the east of the A316, between and including Boston Gardens to the north and Riverside Drive to the south (including Staveley Gardens). For details on which groups are eligible for an exemption to this restriction, along with information on how to apply for an exemption, please click on this link

Burlington Lane

The new trial restriction on Staveley Road is likely to displace some traffic onto Burlington Lane as motorists seek a route through the area to avoid the Hogarth Roundabout.

To keep traffic volumes in the area low, a ‘no entry’ (except cycles) restriction into Burlington Lane from the A316 has been introduced. The restriction applies to all motor vehicles, so there are no permit holders. Motorists and cyclists are still able to exit Burlington Lane onto the A316.

These new measures have been introduced as a trial, under a new Experimental Traffic Management Order (ETMO), which enables consultation to run alongside the trials having been implemented. The council will be considering feedback received on the trials from road users, residents, businesses and other stakeholders over the next six months. This feedback, alongside traffic data collected to assess the impact of the schemes, will be analysed before determining whether the trials should be extended, made permanent or removed.

Please see the ‘Related Documents’ section for a copy of Chief Officer Decisions relating to these measures, along with the most recent resident letter relating to these proposals. Please note that we will continually update the Equalities Impact Assessment in response to feedback received.

Why your views matter

Please give us your feedback on the new trial schemes using the short survey below. This feedback, alongside traffic data on the impact of the schemes, will be analysed before determining whether the trial should be extended, made permanent or removed.

Our consultation will be open until Wednesday 7 September 2022, and we would strongly encourage you to share your input, whether you have a positive or negative view of how the trial is working
