Twickenham to Brentford cycleway - revised proposals for South Street and Upper Square

Overview

As you may be aware, the council recently consulted on proposals to improve the existing cycle route between Ivy Bridge, Isleworth, and London Road, Brentford, shown on the map extract below

The route was split into four sections for the purpose of this consultation. The proposals for each section received majority support from respondents. However, significant concerns were raised about proposals at South Street and Upper Square.

As a result, and after discussions with ward Councillors, the scheme, excluding the proposals for South Street and Upper Square, has been approved for detailed design and construction.

The Chief Officer Decision, outlining this decision and providing feedback on comments received, was published on 31 October 2019 and can be viewed here – Chief Officer Decision

Revised Proposals – South Street and Upper Square

Although a majority did support the proposals in this section, a number of concerns were raised. Respondents were concerned that the introduction of shared use on the northern side of South Street and throughout Upper Square service road would not provide enough space or priority for pedestrians, and would create conflict between cyclists and pedestrians, particularly at the bus stop and during school start and finish times.

As a result of these concerns, and following discussions with Ward Councillors, Officers have developed revised proposals for this section. These include:

  • Providing a segregated two-way cycle track at footway level. The track would be laid in black bitmac, to contrast with the paved pedestrian footway. A kerb with a ridged finish would be laid between the cycle track and the footway to provide clear guidance and prevent cyclists from straying onto the footway.
  • Re-siting the bus stop outside Isleworth Public Hall to the west of the toucan crossing, to remove the potential for conflict between bus passengers and cyclists. This proposal would also help to reduce delays to general traffic. At present, the two stops in this part of the road are opposite each other, which creates some local congestion when both stops are in use at the same time. Re-siting the bus stop would alleviate this issue.
  • Moving the kerb line out to maximise the space available for pedestrians and cyclists, without impacting on general traffic and bus movements.
  • Installing a zebra crossing on the cycle track next to the loading bay, to provide clear priority for loading activity, and all pedestrian movements to and from parking bays.
  • Providing road markings and signage to give clear guidance to cyclists and pedestrians.
